 February - March 2013
“It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.” –Margaret Stortz
 Changes
We are all familiar with the old observation that the only thing guaranteed is change. This is a time of year for change, as you have all attested to by sharing how ready your brains and bodies are for Spring.
Soon we will be into warm days, the smell of blossoms, and nurturing sunlight. As we open into a new season, I always try to think about what Nature is trying to get us to pay attention to, and with Spring I usually think of renewal, starting new projects and being more active.
As we warm ourselves up, ask yourself what the Universe is calling you forward to do, to change, to initiate, in service to yourself and to those around you. And be gentle with yourself both physically and emotionally as you get jump-started again.
If change is going to happen, we would be wise to be active rather than passive participants.
 Be well,
Dr. Matthew
News from Us
Speaking of changes!
We have a few “personnel changes” to share with those of you who haven't been in for an adjstment lately.

First, Lauren and Audrey and I would like to announce the arrival of our newest family member. Oliver Dean Hertert was born Monday, February 25 after a much shorter labor than our last one! He was born at home, arrived happy and healthy, and has been a sweet and mostly-quiet kiddo thus far. A special thank you to all those we rescheduled for your understanding, and to all those of you who have brought sweet gifts and especially DINNERS! I think we've only cooked twice in the last three weeks and for that we are grateful.
Second, a reminder about Dr. Erin, who started with us in January and has been our most excellent intern to date. She has made a huge contribution to the family, and has an inspiring enthusiasm for health care and chiropractic. As a reminder, her internship is an opportunity for her and not an obligation for you, so if for any reason you prefer not to have her present for your treatment, just let us know when you arrive.
Third, we welcomed a new staff member, Pam. You will be talking with her on the phone and her beautiful smile will welcome you warmly to the office. Pam has been a dear friend for some time, and I am ecstatic about getting to share her with all of you. Please be patient as she gets the swing of things!
After two years Jenny left us to return to her first love, child care and development. She shared: “Dear Friends, working at Centre Chiropractic has been such a wonderful opportunity for me. I have met some truly amazing people. However, it is time for me to say good-bye to our chiropractic family. I have been offered a teaching position at a preschool on campus that I simply could not turn down. Thank you for sharing your lives with me, and for letting me share mine with you.” We will miss her, and please let me know if you'd like her contact info.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
 Highmark Policy Changes Update
After concerned (and angry) communications from doctors and customers, Highmark extended "soft implementation" through March of 2013. What this means is that providers are still required to fill out paperwork to practice the new system but payment for care will not be denied until after the first week of April. This is good, yet also has the “side effect” that we still don't have a real sense of whether requests for additional visits will be approved reasonably or restrictively.
Based on some of the other changes we've seen them make, I think the outlook is not good. Every few weeks we discover another “caveat” of the program which seems to affect Highmark customers more severely.
In February we learned that shortly after the enrollment period ended - meaning the point at which seniors can no longer change which plan they choose - Highmark decided that all Medicare (Freedom Blue) customers would not only be limited to 8 visits annually, but that they would have to use all 8 within 60 days of the first treatment they have each year. Coming for care January 1st means you have no coverage past the end of February.
This week we learned that Highmark intends that all 8 of your visits within a modality (PT, chiropractic) are only valid at that office. In other words our new clients transferring from another DC in the area have 8 visits there but none with us, even if they only had one treatment with the other doctor.
Lauren is working on these issues aggressively, but one provider's feedback will not get us far. We cannot encourage you strongly enough to write and call Highmark, your HR offices, your State Reps, and the PA Insurance Commissioner's office. We are working to get complaint forms at the front desk for the Insurance Commissioner, whose office gets funded based on how mnay complaints are filed, which works in our favor and makes it more likely to see action taken.
Your voice matters in this. You really do have power to change this for all your family and friends affected by these changes.

For those of you who may have missed it, we spent several months producing a series of videos on chiropractic, Gonstead, adjusting and spiritual psychology which are all posted on our website and on our video channel on YouTube. In the coming year my intention is to record a series of videos for the most common stretching and strengthening exercises we do so you'll have a visual reference in addition to memory and handouts.
New Research
Moderate Aspirin Use Tied to Severe Eye Damage
Over 20 years researchers tracked volunteers who used aspirin at least twice a week for more than three months, and found a definitive though slight increase in the rate of macular degeneration. The study showed the effects could take ten years to manifest, and produced concern because one in five adults now takes aspirin daily as suggested by MDs for certain heart conditions. Read more…
Vigorous Exercisers Sleep Better
Shocker - a new poll of 1,000 Americans showed that people who reported vigorous exercise slept better than those reporting moderate exercise, light exercise or no activity. Just sayin'. Read more…
Chiropractic Patients Less Likely to Have Spine Surgery
In another shocker, a recent study published in Spine found a strong association between chiropractic and avoidance of low back surgery. Key findings included that patients under age 35, women, Hispanics and patients whose first provider was a chiropractic physician had reduced odds of lumbar spine surgery. Approximately 43 percent of patients who saw a surgeon first had surgery, whereas only 1.5 percent of those who saw a chiropractic physician first ended up having surgery. Read more…
Whiplash Does Not Lead to Litigousness
It has long been suggested by auto insurance companies that people who have serious injuries like whiplash and then sue are more likely to have longer recovery times and worse end-results. A cynical mind concludes that these patients manufacture complaints and delay recovery to gain more financial rewards. A recent analysis by a research team in Australia found that, in fact, people who are more seriously injured and therefore have worse recoveries are more likely to seek compensation. This rigorous investigation poined out that the studies cited by the auto insurance industry as proof of the cynical view were poorly conducted and had serious methodologic flaws. Read more…

Peace by Facebook?
This is an incredibly touching and inspiring TED talk about peace in the Middle East being actively created by Israelis and Palestinians on Facebook.

Bruce Lipton
Bruce Lipton is a research biologist who has become well-known for his ability to relate new age concepts scientifically. This is a video he recorded for an EFT conference last year, and if you can forgive the commercial part of the video, you'll find fascinating perspectives and ideas. He's one of my favorite people to listen to and learn from.

Peter Diamandis and Steven Kotler, Abundance
This book, billed as "An antidote to pessimism by tech entrepreneur turned philanthropist, Peter H. Diamandis and award-winning science writer Steven Kotler," is truly inspiring and encouraging. In an era where many of us feel frustrated with politics, economics, environmental considerations and crime, this book is a great resource for your bookshelf for those days when you're wondering how bad - or good - things can get.
