Summertime Rolls

After such a long winter and such a delinquent, short and moody spring, summer is finally here. Enjoy before it's winter again!

Rememebr to drink a lot of water, get electrolytes (salt), and make sure outdoor activities are followed by a tick check. Lyme's is ugly.

We're fortunate to have an area like ours, with hundreds of hiking and biking trails, awesome events at Tussey, and theme parks and winereys a short drive away.

Live it up before winter comes again....

(And make sure you read through the entire newsletter - lots of cool new stuff happening!)

With blessings,
Matthew

News from Us

Practitioner Changes! Most of you know that Dr. Chris left our practice and is relocating to north-central Pennsylvania so he can be closer to his family. He will be missed and if he has any big news he asks us to share with you, you'll see it here.

In the meantime we are thrilled to announce that our longtime friend and staffer Rae, who has been a massage therapist for many years, has decided to take over Chris' space in our practice. But she has more than massage up her sleeve - see the interview below for more details. But in the meantime - Welcome, Rae!

Parking for People's Choice (and etc.) We had a bunch of phone calls, emails and texts from clients wondering if they could park in our lot for the People's Choice Festival. Just so you guys know, my house is your house, and you're always welcome to park at the office - BUT there are a few guidelines.

First: Be cool. It's free parking, so don't be a twerp and park other people in or get competitive for spaces, etc. First-come, first-served, and during our business hours remember the people paying for care need a place to park, too! (See "be cool" above).

Second: if you haven't been in for a treatment in, like, six years - not so cool. Go pony up the $5 to park down the street and let our active clients park in our office. You know who you are ;) (See "be cool" above)

Third: Just because I'm cool (and you're being cool, too) doesn't mean the landlord always is, so PLEASE always leave a note on your dashboard saying something like, "Parked here with permission of Dr. Matthew," so I can back you up if he wanders through cranky one day.

Fourth: Have fun!

Speak Up About Highmark Changes While chiropractic and physical therapy associations across the northeast have been lobbying Highmark and state legislators to resotre benefits taken away this year, we need Highmark's customers to speak up. This means you! The most effective actions you can take are to file written complaints with all human resources departments at Penn State (or your company if your benefits have been affected) and also to file a complaint with the Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner.

The Insurance Office is actually funded based on how many complaints they are asked to investigate, meaning they are paid to, and happy to, take complaints. The Insurance Commissioner wields the greatest power outside the PSU administration - but neither can take action unless you speak up!

Doctor's offices are authorized to file on behalf of their patients, so if you'd like to fill out the form and have us offer feedback on the complaint language, we would be more than happy to help. Thanks for fighting for us and for yourself.

Help Us Help More People

Getting the spine adjusted

Recently I realized that I am asking for help in a way that could be overwhelming. I've been asking for help with three different social media sites. If I had this request from a friend, I'd want to, but would set it aside for later! So from now on I will be focusing on one site and asking for your help with it.

This issue I'm again asking you to please write a review on Centre Chiropractic at Yelp. Thank you all very much!

For those of you who may have missed it, we spent several months producing a series of videos on chiropractic, Gonstead, adjusting and spiritual psychology which are all posted on our website and on our video channel on YouTube. In the coming year my intention is to record a series of videos for the most common stretching and strengthening exercises we do so you'll have a visual reference in addition to memory and handouts.

These are fun if you've ever wondered what's going on behind you while you're busy lying down!

New Research

Arthroscopic Knee Surgery No Better Than Sham Surgery

A study in Finland with 146 patients suffering from "ideal meniscus problems" (i.e. not arthritis as they wanted to test the full benefits of arthroscopic surgery) found that arthroscopy relieves pain in the short term but over the course of a year performs no better than a fake surgeery. ADHD Tied to Tylenol Use During Pregnancy

Children whose mothers took acetaminophen while pregnant had up to a 40 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with ADHD, according to a study published in JAMA Pediatrics in February, which involved more than 64,000 Danish mothers and their children. By the age of 7, these children also were more likely to use ADHD medication and exhibit ADHD-like behavior problems. Read more here…

Featured Practitioner — Workshop Leader Rae Stefaniak

Rae Stefaniak, Coach

So I told you in our last e-newsletter that I'd be sharing more about Rae's work as a coach, which she does primarily through a series of individual and group workshops. Some of these she's been doing for years, and another she's been putting her heart and soul into developing for years and is getting ready to launch this fall at our office.

Before you get on to reading details about the process, I need you to know that Rae is a powerful coach. Part of the work that Rae and I do is supporting each other throughout the day, and she has more than proven her mettle as an insightful, intuitive, compassionate woman who listens with masterful ears. She is able to see to the heart of things and give concise and actionable suggestions (when asked for!) and manages to do it with a loving heart yet without "touchy feely" inauthenticity. She's been of great service to me - and that's just as a coworker! Imagine what she could do for you in a workshop context!

Check out the details below and call her tomorrow at our office number for more details, to schedule an individual session, or to get starting date information about her group courses.

So Rae, tell me about the worry reduction workshops you've been doing in recent years.
The version of this work I do for individuals consists of four 90-minute sessions focused on targeting your patterns of worry, and how they affect the physical and mental aspects of your daily life. The sessions consist of a combination of worry-reduction activities, breathwork, massage, and Reiki. People who've completed the series consistently report better coping mechanisms, increased relaxation, and finding they have healthier and more positive thought patterns.

And there's a "group version" of this series, too, right? How is it different?
It's a small, intimate, closed group that meets twice for 60-minute sessions consisting of activities and breathwork only. Group work is beneficial to those who are willing to discuss and share their struggles with anxiety. I've found that this dynamic allows for broader support and reassurance in knowing that others have developed the same challenges. It can allow for significant releasing of old behaviors and a greater sense of empowerment and provides an opportuniy to form really powerful friendships

That sounds awesome - in my own coaching programs I've found that the group dynamic is a really cool one where synergy creates unexpected healing opportunities... but you also have a new program starting this fall?
Yes, it's the LovEvolution Series, and I also have individual and group versions of this program. Here the emphasis is on creating more loving, peaceful, and empowering thought patterns around loving yourself, loving your money, loving your health, and other similar themes. In this case the individual program is six 45-minute sessions intended to bring a balanced and holistic perspective towards healing different aspects of our lives. There is a strong focus on gratitude and forgiveness work. It's a safe and supportive space to do significant emotional releasing for those women who need to do that.

And there's a group version, too?
Yes, six 60-minute small closed-group sessions following the same protocol. Activities and open discussion follow brief guiding content from me outlining a topic, which of course may change direction based on the energy of the group. As you mentioned, group work is profound for those looking to connect with, and be encouraged by, others. Because to the sensitive nature of some topics, participants must commit to the full series and sign a confidentiality waiver.

Very exciting! How can people sign up?
They can call me at the office, 466-2000, or on my massage therapy line, 919-608-8146. Women interested in the LovEvolution group program need to call me sooner rather than later, it's a small group with only a few spaces and there's been a lot of interest so far.

Thanks, Rae - we look forward to it!

Beautiful

It's so amazing how beauty, love and inspiration can be spread worldwide so easily now through the internet.

I saw this video maybe a year ago but wanted to share it with those of you who haven't seen it, it's about a little girl who gets a miracle by way of cleft palate surgery...

Just for the Fourth

I'm not often sentimental, so I hope you'll forgive me on this one. 1,000 high school students, 18 floors - pretty cool!

Charles Duhigg, The Power of Habit

Charles Duhigg, The Power of Habit

This book was an amazing look into the anatomy, physiology and psychology of habits, touching on diverse examples from 12-step groups, the NFL, gambling and dementia to explain how habits work in our brains and our lives.

Duhigg draws on over 200 interviews with the leading researchers to share the most current information to help you change your patterns - and your life. This was a fascinating read... This is an area of interest of mine, but I think everyone would enjoy this deep but fast journey.
